Choosing the Right AFSL - InterPrac

Choosing the Right AFSL

Choosing the Right AFSL

Selecting the right Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL) is one of the most important decisions you’ll make as a financial adviser or accountant. The right licensee doesn’t just ensure compliance, it empowers you to grow confidently, deliver exceptional client outcomes, and build a sustainable business.

At InterPrac Financial Planning, part of Sequoia Financial Group, we understand that advisers value flexibility, transparency, and strong support systems. That’s why we provide a balanced model giving you the freedom to operate your own business while being backed by one of Australia’s most experienced and trusted financial services networks.

When choosing an AFSL, consider factors such as:

At InterPrac, we help advisers answer “yes” to every one of these questions. We’re more than a licensee – we’re your strategic growth partner.

Our Investment Approach

We currently manage over AUD $18 billion in total assets, comprising AUD $10 billion in investment platforms and AUD $8 billion in direct investments. Our approach is independent and research-driven, ensuring that client outcomes are always at the forefront of our decisions.

We maintain no bias toward any specific platform or product provider. Instead, we leverage comprehensive industry research from multiple reputable sources to build an Approved Product List (APL) that combines both direct and indirect investment opportunities.

This diversified, evidence-based framework allows us to design portfolios that align closely with each client’s objectives, risk tolerance, and long-term financial goals, delivering balanced exposure and consistent performance across market conditions.

Can You Help Me Grow My Business?

Absolutely. We offer the tools, insights, and partnerships you need to grow a profitable and future-ready financial advice business.

InterPrac Financial Planning has grown from a single in-house adviser to a national network of over 350 Authorised Representatives – a testament to the strength of our support and culture.

Our services include:

  • Weekly business and marketing updates featuring new strategies, client engagement ideas, and compliance insights.
  • Practice management consulting and coaching, tailored to your firm’s goals.
  • Succession and growth planning for long-term sustainability and exit readiness.
  • Compliance education and legislative updates to keep your business protected and competitive.

Whether you’re establishing a new advice business or scaling an existing one, InterPrac helps you develop a strategic action plan that blends personal growth, professional success, and regulatory confidence.

How do you manage your Approved Product List (APL)?

An Approved Product List (APL) is a list of investment products, risk insurance, superannuation, and other financial products. The licensee has approved these for use by its authorised representatives.

We maintain no bias toward any specific platform or product provider.
Instead, we leverage comprehensive industry research from multiple reputable sources to build an Approved Product List (APL) that combines both direct and indirect investment opportunities.

Our APL is managed by our Investment Committee. We have a diverse approved product list including ASX 300 shares (including Exchange Traded Funds and Listed Investment Companies) and the ability to seek approval for stocks outside the ASX 300, all insurance providers and all product platforms.

Advice on direct shares must be underpinned by qualitative research obtained from a qualified source, such as a stock broker or analyst.

Managed Funds must have a Recommended and Highly Recommended rating by Lonsec (a highly regarded independent research provider). However, we do look at research from other providers (such as Morningstar Research and SQM) if and when required.

What planning software do you use?

Our mission is to help advisers build a profitable, sustainable business, and enable you to deliver an integrated and practical financial service solution to your clients. To support this endeavour, we recognise that many planners may have existing relationships with a variety of software providers and we work with those providers where possible to implement the InterPrac Financial Planning templates and tools.

Software costs are not included in Authorised Representative fees. You may choose to use any software you like. These costs will vary subject to the software you use and the modules you choose within it. We support Xplan, Midwinter and AdviserLogic software, plus Astute Wheel: Client Engagement Tools, which means you can have access to these at wholesale rates with all key documents coded for your benefit.

You are not required to have software if you do not wish to have it. You can use the broad collection of documents we have available including those of the software providers noted above, or alternatively, once approved by our Compliance Manager, you can use your own Fact Find and Risk Profile tools.

Can I brand my own business?

Yes. You have worked hard to build your practice, and we encourage you to continue to grow your own brand and practice identity.

How do you provide research and technical support?

Online research from Lonsec on managed funds, direct shares, LIC’s and ETF’s is provided, and registration with Technical Support Hotlines with most product providers (including BT, TAL, AIA, Challenger, Macquarie, IOOF, Netwealth, AMP and Colonial to name a few) has been set up. Additionally, many advisers use SQM and Morningstar for research at their own expense.

Are you the kind of adviser who’ll thrive with a growth-minded licensee?

You’re likely a great fit if you’re:

  • Self-directed and entrepreneurial, with a clear vision for your practice.
  • Client-first and ethical, focused on advice quality and best-interest outcomes.
  • Allergic to rigid product constraints, and prefer flexibility within a robust APL.
  • Collaborative by nature, valuing open communication and practical support.
  • Brand-proud, wanting the freedom to build and promote your own identity.
  • Committed to compliance, and appreciate clear, commercial guidance.
  • Serious about growth, embracing coaching, metrics, and sustainable scale.
  • Change-ready, staying ahead of regulatory and market developments.
